Tanzania Team Travel Itinerary

For those who are interested, here is the itinerary for our trip.  There might be some changes.  We will update our itinerary and our expectations as we go.



Itinerary (as best we know it)

September 25, Tuesday         
  • Leave from the Rochester airport. Ticket prices were lower to leave from Rochester, which is a double blessing.  We'll fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul airport, and then head to Amsterdam                               
September 26, Wednesday     
  • It will turn into Saturday as we fly to Europe.  We will connect in Amsterdam, then board a flight to Kilamonjaro Airport, which will arrive there at 8:00 PM local time.  Tanzania is 8 hours ahead of Rochester, so it will be noon in Rochester when we land.  We'll have been traveling for more than 24 hours at this point.  
  •  Meet Bashiri, our driver, at the airport.  He'll help us exchange money and then we'll drive to Arusha, where we will overnight at the Jevas Hotel.
September 27, Thursday          
  • Tour Arusha, shop for the things we've planned to provide, such as wifi routers, other computer accessories and items for a sewing day.  We should be able to visit Fabric Place and Masai Market.

September 28, Friday              
  • Drive to Ngorongoro. This is a part of the trip which is pretty much "vacation."  The participants paid for this themselves.  Funds raised by the church are being reserved for service & items for the Tanzania churches and schools.  Nevertheless, we've all be advise that if we are in Tanzania, we should not miss the change to see some of the natural beauty.

  • Afternoon Safari. Overnight Ngorongoro Serena.
September 29, Saturday          
  • Ngorongoro Safari during the day. Drive to Singida. 
  • Overnight Singida Regency Resort.
September 30, Sunday             
  • Worship in Singida at Immanuel Cathedral. 
  • Overnight Singida Regency
October 1, Monday                  
  • Visit Primary School in Ihanja. (Synod office closed.) 
  • Overnight Singida Regency
October 2, Tuesday                  
  • Meetings with Central Diocese leadership. 
  • Overnight Singida Regency.
October 3, Wednesday            
  • Drive to Kiomboi. Visit Kiomboi Lutheran Theological College. 
  • Overnight in Kiomboi (MN House?)
October 4, Thursday                
  • Work and teach at Kiomboi Lutheran Theological College. 
  • Overnight MN House?
October 5, Friday                     
  • Women drive to Kijota for Sewing Day. 
  • Men stay in Singida for meetings. 
  • Overnight in Singida
October 6, Saturday                 
  • Drive to Kijota. Tour Kijota, Hull School and Kijota Church. 
  • Meet with members of our companion congregation. 
  • Overnight in Singida.
October 7, Sunday                   
  • Drive to Kijota. Worship in Kijota. 
  • Overnight in Singida.
October 8, Monday                  
  • Short reception with ELCT leaders at Central Diocese. 
  • Drive to Tarangire National Park. Afternoon safari.
  • Overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge.
October 9, Tuesday                  
  • Morning safari at Tarangire. 
  • Drive to JRO airport, where we'll start our journey home at 9:05 pm
                                               
October 10, Wednesday         
  •  Arrive back in Rochester at 2:15 pm; again more than 24 hours after we started traveling.

 Worship today was one of joy and celebration. Choirs sang and danced, the sermon was preached, brass played and several offerings were taken, 5 in all and included an auction of produce and other items. Another very special part of the service was the baptism of 7 month old Liam Marcus. Sherry was his baptismal sponsor and had the privilege of holding him while he was baptized.

Hull Secondary School

On October 6, after visiting the orphanage , we drove back to Kijota to visit the Hull Secondary School, which had once been called the Vivien Gulleen Institute. Of the five Travelers, only Mark had previous experience with the school, and he told us later that he was very concerned about what we would find.  In yet another example of the Suprising Blessings we had on this trip, we found the Hull School very, very healthy and vibrant -- and asking for help because of how much it has grown. A bit of history.  Many years ago, when the school was a school for girls, Mount Olive had had a strong relationship with the school.  It housed around 30 girls, and Mount Olive members paid for the construction of the Dining Hall (among other things.)  Here is that Dining Hall. Ngorongoro Safari

We left Arusha early in a safari truck headed to Ngorongoro Conservation Reserve. What a beautiful park and a beautiful day. We saw so many animals. Wildebeest (gnu) left, Sherry right Cape buffalo  Gazelle  Lion                                              Hippos
